Gums or gingiva may bleed due many reasons however the most common reason is the accumulation of plaque and tartar (calculus) on the teeth. Plaque and calculus harbor bacteria that causes inflammation in the gums leading to a condition called Gingivitis. If not treated, Gingivitis may progress to more severe condition called as Periodontitis (pyorrhea) characterized by bleeding gums and loosening of teeth. Although routine oral hygiene practices like tooth brushing twice a day, flossing and use of mouth wash helps in reducing the incidence of development of Gingivitis and Periodontitis but it cannot totally prevent it. Hence, professional help becomes necessary to treat this condition if an individual develops or suffers from Gingivitis or Periodontitis.
